By Mike Foster • Sep 7th, 2010 • Category: Skin Care News

Becoming pregnant can be extremely stressful these days and one of these stresses are “how do I prevent Stretch marks during pregnancy?” It’s a question that has plagued many pregnant women over the years.

In this article I’m going to explain what causes these annoying scars, then I’m going to go over 4 tips you can start doing right now that will help you avoid stretch marks during pregnancy. Stretch marks are little scars that occur when the skin elasticity breaks down during rapid stretching of the skin.

The Dermis layer of the skin that controls the skins elasticity is pulled too fast and therefore the body can’t produce skin cells fast enough to fill in the surface area of the skin. There are many things you can start doing today and in the near future that will help determine if you get these scars, but here are 4 tips that I find important.

1. Protect your skin from the Sun – Many of us know that the sun can damage our skin, but its even more important if you trying to avoid marks or any other scars. Anyone who has tanned a scar before knows it makes the scar stand out. Make sure to use a SPF 30 which helps keep the skin from drying out. Dry skin will be more prone to stretch marks then moist healthy skin.

2. Start taking skin promoting supplements – If you haven’t already start taking a multi-vitamin I would start, But the most important supplement for preventing scars is Zinc. So make sure your vitamin contains enough zinc or consider a separate zinc supplement. I would also consider taking B-Vitamins, Vitamin E and Fish Oils.

3. Eat a Balanced Diet and Avoid Excess Caffeine and Alcohol – As obvious as this sounds most people these days don’t get the required nutrients they need. It’s also especially important to make sure your getting all your nutrients when pregnant and feeding for 2 people.

Eat at least 3 balanced meals per day with 2 small snacks between two of those meals. This will give you a constant flow of nutrients throughout the day. Avoid alcohol and caffeine since they both dehydrate the skin, and dehydrated skin has less elasticity. If your currently pregnant you should avoid alcohol all together to avoid the risk of causing Fetal Alcohol syndrome.

4. Keep your skin Moisturized – This one also seems like a no-brainier, but you would be surprised how many people don’t keep there skin moisturize when pregnant. Especially the lower tummy area. Where most stretch marks occur. I would use any moisturizer that has Coco butter or Shea butter, even better then a simple moisturizer would be a stretch mark cream, which have many high quality natural ingredients that aid in preventing stretch marks during pregnancy.

There are a few different stretch mark creams on the market, even a few have a free trail. My website below has a few product reviews, and some home remedies you can try today.
