Proven to be effective for dealing with skin problems, glycolic acid products have become popular these days. They come in many formulations, such as skin moisturizers and lotions, skin exfoliators, soaps, anti-aging creams, and facial cleansers.

So then, what is glycolic acid? It belongs to the group of chemicals labeled fruit acids, or alpha-hydroxy acids, which are known for their skin improving qualities. It is extracted from sugar cane and, being both natural and organic, it has been considered one of the best skin treatments available.

It has been used for peeling, renewing or revitalizing skin, moisturizing, and reducing signs of skin aging. To increase further its beneficial effects, it can be combined with products containing vitamin A and C, which have also been proven beneficial to the skin.

Although the beneficial effects of glycolic acid as treatment for acne and other skin conditions are proven, the details as to how this substance works are still being studied. Based on studies, here are the major beneficial effects of this acid…

- Skin appearance is improved through the elimination of fine lines and wrinkles.

- Skin moisture is increased by 300% when it is applied twice daily for three weeks.

- It permeates into the skin to help improve the proper flow of blood, which makes skin looks fresh.

- It more effective than other regular lotions and gels for treating sun damaged skin.

- When used mixed with with skin bleaching agents, it helps lighten the skin.

- It has been proven to treat acne and, when it is combined with salicylic acid, it is more effective than acne products containing 10% benzoyl peroxide.

Should the glycolic acid content of a product be too little, it usually does not work too well. However, too much of it will result in skin damage.

High concentrations of glycolic acid are even used for degreasing and rust removal. Concentrations of 70% or more can be extremely damaging. In fact, the scientists consider products with concentrations of above 10% to be ‘hazardous’.

As it is acid based, manufacturers of products with glycolic acid recognize that the glycolic acid content of their products must be neutralized so as prevent skin becoming irritated. Glycolic acid treatments, thus, have to be performed by dermatologists when the treatment involves more than a 10% concentration of glycolic acid.

Still, proven to be really effective in improving the skin when used appropriately, glycolic acid products have now firmly established themselves on the cosmetics market.
